New Lo Tishkach report details state of Jewish burial grounds in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Region

Lo Tishkach has published its latest report into the state of Jewish burial sites in the Uzzhorodskyi district (or raion) in the western Ukrainian region of Zakarpattia. The report outlines the current situation and location of 26 Jewish cemeteries, most of which were established in the 19th century.

The report found most sites to lack clear demarcation and maintenance. Many sites also suffer from vegetation overgrowth and some cemeteries are also threatened by erosion and lack of water drainage. Urgent action is needed in order to save the many burial grounds that are witnesses of the once vibrant Jewish life in the region.

Additional reports covering further districts of the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine will be published in the coming months.

Please contact us if you would like to obtain a copy of the report.
