Dotted around the Carpathian Mountain range in western Ukraine are some of the best preserved though sadly often neglected Jewish cemeteries of Eastern Europe. As part of its survey work in Ukraine, the Lo Tishkach Foundation has expanded its activities into the Zakarpattia oblast. Earlier this year, we published survey results showing the remarkable cemetery sites in the villages of Uzhhorodskyi raion. Over the last few months, led by historians from Israel and the Kiev-based Centre for Jewish Education, historical research was backed up by on the ground surveys in the Mizhhirskyi, Mukachivskyi, Perechynskyi, Svaliavskyi, Tiachivskyi and Velykobereznianskyi raions, providing a unique record of Jewish cemeteries in a region which was historically part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
