Lo Tishkach’s first detailed report into the current state of cemeteries and mass grave sites in Latvia is set for publication in the coming days.

The report on some 30 sites in the Zemgale region in the southern part of the country covers the historically German-speaking part of the country around the Courland province bordering on Lithuania.

The Zemgale report is the first of four regional reports on Latvia set for publication during 2010/11 and represents the results of surveys undertaken in the summer of 2010 on more than 200 sites.

The surveys were undertaken by students and young people from the Latvian jewish community and formed part of Lo Tishkach’s education projects in Ukraine and the Baltic states this year.

The publication of this report comes following one of the worst cases of cemetery desecration at the site of the main cemetery in the capital, Riga, at which large numbers of tombstones were daubed with white swastikas.
