Recent surveys in Ukraine’s central Cherkasy Oblast show that many of the region’s Jewish cemeteries and mass grave sites are in an alarming state, as they lack proper identification, demarcation and delineation. Some sites are also at risk from incompatible nearby development.

Initial data from the surveys, which will continue into July, suggests that the percentage of unprotected sites is higher than in other areas of Ukraine surveyed by Lo Tishkach. Over the next few months, Lo Tishkach will compile a report including photographs, data and details of assistance needed for each of the more than 80 Jewish cemeteries and mass grave sites in Cherkay Oblast.

The surveys are part of an educational project involving 100 Ukrainian Jewish youth.
