About 50 students from Jewish communities across Ukraine took part in a Lo Tishkach seminar in Bakhchisaray in Crimea in July. Participants presented their micro-projects for historical research and practical restoration work at Jewish burial sites in their local regions.
Lo Tishkach has published its latest report into the state of Jewish burial sites in the Uzzhorodskyi district (or raion) in the western Ukrainian region of Zakarpattia. The report outlines the current situation and location of 26 Jewish cemeteries, most of which were established in the 19th century.
The Lo Tishkach Foundation, in cooperation with the United States Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad and the Association of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (VAAD), is commemorating the mass killings of Jews in the towns of Dymer, Fastiv and Baryshivka by dedicating memorial stones at these sites to the victims, marking the 70-year anniversary of the Holocaust
Dotted around the Carpathian Mountain range in western Ukraine are some of the best preserved though sadly often neglected Jewish cemeteries of Eastern Europe. As part of its survey work in Ukraine, the Lo Tishkach Foundation has expanded its activities into the Zakarpattia oblast.
The third Lo Tishkach regional survey in Latvia is due to be published in the coming days. Students and Jewish youth surveyed 36 cemetery and mass grave sites in the western region of Kurzeme during the spring and summer. While many of these sites have received the necessary protection in recent years, many other sites still suffer from lack of demarcation and general neglect.
