Improvement Works at Tilburg Jewish Cemetery

September 13, 2011 – A number of works improving access to the Jewish Cemetery in the Dutch city of Tilburg are being carried out by the local municipality in cooperation with the Dutch Jewish Communities (NIG). The works include reducing the forest area at the site and moving the wall.

New Jewish Cemetery in North Essex

September 19, 2011 – Following years of negotiations, a Jewish section has been consecrated at Colchester Cemetery in North Essex. The section provides room for about 90 graves. Previously, the local community had to travel to London to bury its deceased members.

Holocaust Mass Grave Found in Eastern Ukraine

September 23, 2011 – A Holocaust mass grave has been found near the city of Dnipropetrovsk in Eastern Ukraine. According to a city official, the site was found by construction workers. Around 20,000 bodies are believed to be buried at the site.

Restoration Works Begin at Liverpool Dean Road Jewish Cemetery

October 7, 2011 – Restoration works are about to begin at the Liverpool Dean Road Jewish Cemetery. Established in 1837, the site saw its last burial in 1929 and has since then fallen into a state of disrepair. A photo exhibition is to mark the launch of the works. The project is financed with lottery money.

Clean-up Works at Amsterdam Zeeburg Jewish Cemetery

November 3, 2011 – Clean-up works have been carried out at the Amsterdam Zeeburg Jewish Cemetery by about 40 Jewish and Muslim volunteers. Over the course of five Sundays, the situation of the site, which is almost completely overgrown, will be improved by the group.

Established in 1714, the cemetery contains about 175,000 graves. The project is coordinated by a foundation created for this purpose.

Memorial Stone Unveiled at Harzgerode Jewish Cemetery

November 10, 2011 – Following months of clean-up works carried out by local schools and youth organisations, a new memorial stone was unveiled at the Harzgerode Jewish Cemetery in Central Germany. The ceremony was attended by municipal officials, who emphasised the importance of the site for the commemoration of history in the region.

Oldenburg Jewish Cemetery Desecrated

November 21, 2011 – Five unidentified individuals desecrated the Jewish cemetery in the German city of Oldenburg by throwing bags containing liquid colour at several gravestones. The incident happened around three o’clock at night and was witnessed by a policeman who happened to be in the area. The police have launched an investigation.

Established in 1814, the site contains about 230 graves and is no longer in active use.
