Lo Tishkach is pleased to announce the completion of the latest stage of development of our Database of European Jewish Burial Grounds. Functions now available include the ability to view locations on Google Maps, a more advanced search function, and high-quality image-viewing software.

EDUCATION – Cemetery and Mass Grave Surveys Underway in Kiev and Odessa Oblasts, Ukraine

Teams of Ukrainian students and youth have begun to visit Jewish cemeteries and mass graves in Kiev and Odessa Oblasts as part of a vast educational project to survey hundreds of Jewish burial sites across Ukraine. Groups led by the Kiev-based Centre for Jewish Education and Odessa Jewish University have to date visited 48 Jewish burial grounds in 29 locations.

CEMETERY FOCUS: Zuromin Jewish Cemetery, Poland

The cemetery is located in the vicinity of an industrial area and is adjacent to ploughed agricultural fields, which probably impinge upon the cemetery. There are no gravestones or memorials at the site. The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland (FODZ) is currently preparing the renovation and enclosure of the area.

We’ve just finished celebrating Pesach, the ultimate preservation of memory festival. And at the Lo Tishkach Foundation, we’re in a race against time to preserve the memory. Where there were once thousands of Jewish communities across eastern and central Europe each looking after their own cemeteries, today many of these burial sites lay unprotected.
