Heritage experts from across south-western Poland joined a Lo Tishkach seminar in Katowice on April 29 at the launch of surveys in Silesia which will see all Jewish burial grounds in the region surveyed over the coming months.
The seminar, which took place in the Jewish community centre in Katowice, was organised by community rabbi, Yehoshua Ellis. The project is supported by the Lo Tishkach Foundation and the Rothschild UK (Hanadiv) Foundation.
By bringing together a number of stakeholders already acting in the preservation of Jewish heritage, Lo Tishkach aims to collect an actual and true picture of the state of Jewish cemeteries and mass grave sites in the region.
At the seminar, presentations were given by Lo Tishkach Executive Director Philip Carmel, Sally Berkovic from Rothschild (Hanadiv) Europe, Poland’s chief rabbi, Michael Schudrich and local rabbi, Yehoshua Ellis.
Local experts from each district in the Silesia vovoidership presented their current projects.
A full list of burial sites according to district has already been drawn up and standardised Lo Tishkach mass grave and cemetery survey forms have now been prepared in Polish. Surveys in the region will start later this month with publication of reports beginning in the late summer.
