Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine – Cemetery and mass grave surveys led by project partners Hillel Kharkov are underway in this eastern Ukrainian region. Lo Tishkach Education Director Katy Nicholson joined participants on a recent survey visit to a Jewish mass grave in Krasnohrad and was interviewed on Ukrainian television about the project.
Following the completion of preliminary legislative research on the situation for Jewish burial grounds in Latvia, five new pieces of legislation have been added to the Lo Tishkach online compendium, bringing the total to 97 pieces of legislation.
Detailed information on Jewish cemeteries and mass graves in Ukraine – the result of surveys in five Ukrainian regions – is currently being added to the Lo Tishkach database. To assist our visitors, details of these updates are being posted on our homepage as soon as they become available.
The Lo Tishkach Foundation has completed a report on legislation and practice relating to the protection and preservation of Jewish burial grounds in Latvia. The survey, based on preliminary research, finds that the state and maintenance of the country’s approximately 270 Jewish burial grounds varies greatly from one site to another.
This separate section of the Rahumäe municipal cemetery is an active Jewish cemetery. Located off a public road, it is fenced and equipped with a lockable gate. In several places, however, the fence is missing or needs repair. A shed and a 1910 wooden building for religious purposes are located at the site.
